The approach that unlocked higher student logins.
What you need to know in 30 secs?
What’s Wayground?
Wayground (previously Quizizz) is an edtech platform where millions of students take assessments assigned by their teachers.

The problem
Lower students login leads to increase in teachers’ churn rate.

Impact
Increased login rate by ~10% 🎉 outperforming the initial target of ~7%.
Reduced teacher churn rate by ~18% 🎉

100% rollout in 1.5 months
Firstly, let’s understand the problem
Why do teachers churn incase of lower students’ login?
Why students weren't logging in despite of having accounts?
Theory 1
Its not mandatory for the students to login
Theory 2
There’s no intent or advantage for the students to login
Theory 3
Low discovery of Login CTA
Theory 4
Its a hassle logging in every time since laptops aren’t personal.
“We do not have any control on this.”
Finding the “why” behind each theory
Theory 1
Its not mandatory for the students to login. But why?
~ 70% practise sessions
Old experiment which failed!
Built a feature for the teachers to enable mandatory login.

Reason for failure :
Increased the session joining time which then led to increase in session completion time.
Theory 2
There’s no intent or advantage for the students to login. But why?
Insight from few students
Do they login to competitors? if yes, then why?
Students usually log into competitors for avatar customization and seasonal rewards.
Opportunity
Wayground already has Qbits (our avatar shop) which is one of the most loved feature by students.
Theory 3
Low discovery of Login CTA. But why?
By choice we didn’t want to push students to login.
Since most of the students use shared laptops in the school.
Student - Home page
Login CTA was sitting inside “My dashboard”
Approach
To make login discoverable with strong intent by following these 3 principles:
Awareness
About the fancy outfits in the avatar shop.
Social proof
How their classmates are flexing with their fancy avatars.
Announcement
Announce the arrival of new and trendy outfits.
Touch points to surface the entry point to login

This indicates the relevant surfaces where student can Login from.
1
Login CTA here can negatively impact the session join time
2
Login CTA here can negatively impact the session completion time if the login process takes time
3
This is a good surface to experiment since the student has completed the session and if would not negatively affect any other important metrics
Ideation

Idea 1.0
Display the top sellers for FREE
Risks with this idea

Idea 1.1
Broad range of full outfits

Risks with this idea
“Free” might drive short-term engagement and will increase supply demands in the long-term.
Students can logout and grab a new FREE outfit everytime. Leads to supply problem.
Idea 1.2
Reward coins at the end to all the logged-out students.
Broad range of top sellers outfits and trendy outfits.
Classmates who has already possessed the top outfits.
This is one that got shipped
This aligned with our principles and we felt confident going forward with this.
Watch the evolution in action!

For a logged out student :
After the activity is completed, there’s no way or intent to login.
After
After the session ends
For a logged out student :
This design provides an enjoyable (rewards) and informative (outfits) intent to login.
Increased login rate by ~10% 🎉 outperforming the initial target of ~7%.
[68%→75%] within 4 weeks of launch
Reduced teachers’ churn rate by ~18% 🎉
Within the next 2 months of launch
Key takeway
Sometimes the best solutions don't force behavior change, they create natural incentives that make the desired action feel rewarding rather than obligatory. By understanding our students' motivations and respecting their autonomy, we turned a technical challenge into a delightful experience.
